Nor was it lost on Billy, who tucked his wrists under his armpits like wings and uttered the first part of a “Cuh-caw!” noise that quickly died on his lips thanks to Deb’s withering stare.
Between the two of them, their flailing and crowing had the desired effect as the two agents stopped in their tracks to watch them approach, likely debating whether to draw their weapons on the lunatics running toward them.
Deb raised her palms in the international sign of “I mean no harm” and tried to smile in a way that didn’t make her look insane.
“Hello. Sorry to bother you. My partner and I are selling the house next door and just wanted to ask if there is a reason you’re here. Is there an issue with this neighbor we should know about?”
The two agents looked at one another, then the taller of the two turned to Deb and said, “You won’t have trouble with this neighbor, ma’am. He’s dead. Murdered.”
