If you started reading this wondering what the writer might be selling, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn…
that it’s nothing.
That’s right—no discounted rate offer, no call to action urging you to take…well, action. Rather, this is a friendly reminder that having fun in the workplace is okay, and finding a creative business coach who can help you approach work with childlike wonder has the power to transform your work experience in the most wonderful way.
You may be asking yourself…
What is a creative business coach? What can you expect when working with a creative business coach? I mean, it sounds a little…abstract?
All good questions, so let’s dive right in.
What is a creative business coach?
I think an argument can be made there’s no better expert on the magic of childhood—and no better example of a creative business coach—than the esteemed Dr. Seuss. I’ve always found it fascinating that much of what Seuss penned for children is applicable to the workplace, and I’m particularly fond of the following quotes from the classic Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
“And when things start to happen, don't worry, don't stew. Just go right along, you'll start happening too!”
There are times it’s hard to keep all the plates spinning. Duties pile up and responsibilities loom, making us feel unprepared for the challenge. Seuss reminds us that, often, the best course of action is to stop resisting, to lean into the challenge, and to rely on our own well-honed abilities to rise.
“You're off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so... get on your way!”
Movement is key in business…and stagnancy kills. I love that this quote, when used in a business context, frames the mountains we face in the workplace as something to expect…and that they are entirely surmountable.
Dr. Seuss is the perfect answer to the question, What is a creative business coach? A good coach will help you get outside of your comfort zone, take risks, and summit workplace mountaintops in new and surprising ways.
Which brings us to the next question…
What can you expect when working with a creative business coach?
A good creative business coach will you realist that, contrary to popular opinion, the time you spend at work doesn’t have to be droll. It is possible to create a work environment that is actually fun and enjoyable.
How?
By embracing a sense of childlike wonder for yourself and encouraging it in your peers and/or subordinates. Here are 3 ways to make that happen, thanks to a little wisdom from Dr. Seuss:
1. Get Curious
That’s the thing about kids—they ask a million questions. Why are balls round instead of square? Why is the sky blue? Why do we eat with our mouths and breathe through our noses instead of the other way around? Why? Why? WHY???
And, while the seemingly endless barrage of questions can be exhausting for parents, the truth is getting curious and asking questions increases our knowledge and makes us better team players.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
2. Stay Positive
Kids are amazing little bundles of positivity (for the most part). Too often, we’re fooled into thinking we must embrace cynicism and skepticism to get ahead in business. Seuss reminds us to keep our eyes open for the good things in our workday.
“You'll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut.”
3. Believe in Yourself
I love the confidence of children…they’re positively brimming with it. I’m not sure at what point so many of us lose that, but Seuss reminds us how vital we are to the success of our organizations.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
I hope this serves as a reminder to seek out that joyful, positive, and courageous child that lives inside of you…and encourages you to consider working with a creative business coach. You’ll be surprised how effectively you can grow your business when you add a little creative magic to the mix.
